Getty Images Hungers For Flickr Photos

by Ed on July 9, 2008

Getty Images, the well-heeled licensing firm getting around $600 per photo, is looking upon the ocean of photos at Yahoo-owned Flickr as a hungry bear might see a new stream of tasty salmon — it wants a bite.

In a statement, Getty said the free Flickr photos were “impacting” (read: cutting into the profits) its commercial licensing business. Flickr photos, the company said, gives customers that “authenticity” not available with slick commercial images.

Late Tuesday, Getty and Yahoo announced a deal where Getty Images can package and sell the photos and Yahoo gets a cut. Photographers als get a chance to become part of the program.

Associated Blogging Launched

by Ed on June 26, 2008

We’ve launched Associated Blogging, our newest site. The goals are two-fold: to promote and encourage blogs that break trail, publishing news not found elsewhere. We’ll provide regular update on some of the best examples of blogs that break news, plus sightings of blogs credited in last-century news organs. We’re currently debating which blogs do the best job breaking news and encourage you to drop by and voice your opinion.

The other purpose for Associated Blogging is to create an atmosphere where bloggers can collectively rise above their given role of quirky commentators and launch a real 21st Century worldwide social media news service. I encourage you to drop by the site, give it a look and subscribe to the feed- we have lots planned for the future.

Blog News Wire Created

by Ed on June 19, 2008

We’ve published our concept for a blogging news wire as part of our launch of umbrella organization Blog Media Group. The news service is in response to the uproar over the AP’s demand for payment whenever a blogger quotes a news item. Our newswire will combine the power of blogging with the rapid dissemenation of information by bloggers to create a free, user-created worldwide news service. Check out our plan here and let us know what you think.

Guest Bloggers Wanted

by Ed on June 14, 2008

Professional Blogging News is opening the doors for guest-blogging opportunities on this site and many others under development. Bloggers would receive a compensation package, including byline, link, bio and advertising revenue-sharing opportunities. To receive details, use the contact form and choose “Apply for Guest Blogging.”

I’m choosing to offer guest blogging at PBN because my full-time job has made regular updates difficult. I’ll be accepting applications through July 31 and a staff will be created from those entries will be used starting in August.

I’m excited about the changes underway and will share details soon.
