PC World Editor Quits To Create Tech Site

by Ed Sutherland on May 13, 2008

Harry McCracken, PC World’s chief editor, said Monday he’ll leave the online tech news site to create his own online tech news site. The announcement comes as PC World celebrates its 25th anniversary.

“I could happily do this job forever–but new challenges are good, too,” McCracken said from a company blog. He said he plans to have the new tech site up this summer.

McCracken, who has been at PC World since 1994, won’t be totally leaving the publication. The editor said he’ll remain as a contributing editor and writer.

Interesting. I always started off the magazine by reading his article. Funny how so many people who are part of these larger companies are breaking away and doing things on their own.

Om Malik, previously a senior writer at defunct Business 2.0, started traditional media types (at least myself) thinking of jumping ship. Until the past few years, there had been plenty of enthusiasm about a blogging lifestyle, but the money wasn’t there.

Today, advertisers see the value of blogs. McCracken likely can leverage (marketing-speak, yikes) his contacts and PCW audience to kick-start his site.
